In 2024, 57.8 million U.S. adults lived with some form of mental illness, with only half receiving treatment, according to the National Institutes of Health and SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
At Mental Armor, we are dedicated to doing our part in improving the lives of our helpers and our neighbors - locally and nationally.
Our website is designed to be a resource to find other resources and for self-help.
What Makes Us Different?
We started this nonprofit because we, as firefighters, EMT, law enforcement, healthcare workers, and lawyers started locally as Empower Fort Worth, wanted to do something about the high levels of burnout and suicide in our respective communities. The irony is most people think that these alpha groups are tough and the last to burnout or commit suicide. That psychiatrists have the highest suicide rate of any profession shatters those myths.
Our community of alpha helpers regularly experience trauma - directly or secondarily. They often don't seek help, because they too follow the myth that seeking help is weakness. So, they don't. They are afraid of judgment and stigma. Hence, high suicide and burnout.
The common refrain: How can I be an alpha helper if I need help? We are ALL human and ALL need help during our lives.
Our founders were also frustrated that so many people in need had no idea of the resources that do exist. But even when they did learn of the resources, fear of stigma prevented them from reaching out. A culture of "man-up" or tough-it-out reinforced this. We thought that if a group of us alphas start talking about this publicly, maybe that could start the conversation and give permission to others to seek help.
Unlike many nonprofits in this space, we refuse to operate in a silo. We do NOT charge users for our services. And we want your input. We are grassroots. Let us share resources. Let us deal with this together.
Let Us Make a Differencel...Together

I know firsthand the challenges officers face professionally and personally. They put their lives on the line everyday to protect all of us. That stress takes its toll, not only on them, but their families too.
I joined Empower Fort Worth because I believe in its mission - for our whole community.
Editorial Comment: Billy still helps officers in need, speaks about mental health to police departments, operates his Billy's Two-Gun BBQ Food Truck for charitable events, and fishes in S. Padre.

Hello, I am a Texas psychiatrist, who has practiced medicine for over 36 years. Since 1992, I am grateful to have served the Fort Worth community in clinical, administrative, and academic roles. As a physician development coach at the TCU School of Medicine and as Regional Medical Director of Connections Wellness Group, I work to help people live their best through improved wellness. Empower Fort Worth’s mission to “help the helpers” develop mental armor to keep them healthy and resilient is important and one in which I strongly believe.

Hi, I am a project manager for the United Way of Tarrant County. I coordinate services for veterans in our community. As a vet, I know how important it is to match our former warriors with the right resources. Too many organizations operate in silos, and I am proud that United Way and Empower Texas can partner resources to get the needed information and resources out to our communities.

Hi, a lawyer since 1988, my law practice focuses now on commercial law. In my prior work lives, I have had: bipartisan appointments at the U.S. House of Reps; consulted for the World Bank, various federal agencies, and financial services industry; served on a various mediation panels, including the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals; and conducted CLE trainings. I studied international law in London and Oxford, improving my English and gaining a stiff upper lip. But the best (and at times costly) education I receive(d) are all the mistakes in my life, out of which I continue to learn. I enjoy hanging out with artists, songwriters, entrepreneurs, and creators.
